Bridge or Holiday?

You probably hear the word puente quite a bit, and like a lot of English words, it has more than one meaning.

I bring this up now because yesterday was a puente, St. Joseph's Day, one of 18 national holidays in Colombia.

So by now you know puente can mean holiday. The other word you've probably heard for holiday is festivo.

But the first listing for puente in the Spanish dictionary is "bridge." I guess you could say, when used to refer to a holiday, that puente is a metaphor.
